Pastor Pearl Charleston founded Zion Hill Baptist Church in 1952. Located at 1102 Central Ave in Baltimore City, Maryland. Later the church moved to 1022 East Chase Street. After increase in membership, the building at 931 E. Preston Street was purchased. Pastor Charleston became ill and the leadership was entrusted to Rev. Blackmen.
The church split in 1980. All but three members left with Rev. Blackmen to set up a new church taking all the funds, furnishings and other equipment.
Rev. Charleston came out of retirement and resumed pastoring until someone was elected pastor. On August 29, 1980 Rev. Randolph Price was called to pastor Zion Hill. The membership increased yearly, largely due to the bus ministry. Our members came from all over Baltimore City and surrounding counties.
Our Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen ministries served many in the area but had to be discounted due to the condition of the building. The building was being used over capacity and falling down around the congregation. In 1989, preparations began to rebuild Zion Hill. Funds were laboriously found. The building was rebuilt in 1990. At every move to relocate a stumbling block was there. So, we came to the conclusion that God wanted Zion Hill to be on the corner. As soon as we resigned ourselves to that fact, the funding came through. Our congregation marched into the new sanctuary of Zion Hill on December 30, 1990. The cornerstone was laid December 29, 1990.
In 2000, Pastor Price after preaching a sermon at First Christian Community Baptist Church, was called home to be with the Lord in the pulpit. Rev. Nell Chandler became the interim pastor from May 2000 until the installation of Rev. Dr. Anthony Lee Johnson in 2002. Rev. Johnson served until 2008. Rev. Dr. Arnold Brown became pastor 2009- 2010. In December 2013, Zion Hill elected to call Rev. Dr. Douglas V. Logan as Pastor.
Beginning as interim pastor in January 2014, Dr. Logan immediately focused attention to the beautification of our church. Although not complete, we have done significant work in making our church a beautiful place to worship and grow. We are currently working on phase II of the Mamie L Price Fellowship Hall. Under Dr. Logan’s leadership we are “Effectively Seeking a Better Relationship with Christ” while striving to become a five star church. We are continuing to build on the foundations of our faith through worship, fellowship, strong relationships and community outreach. We are challenged to accept all people for who they are, but we will challenge you to grow with us!
